Reg Meuross

Friday 21st September 2018 – we welcome Reg Meuross to the Hinckey ACT.

During 2017 Reg was described by Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2’s Folk Show as a “brilliant singer songwriter with a social conscience” and he toured the length and breadth of England, Scotland and Wales as well as delighting audiences in South Africa, Spain and Portugal.

With special guest Steve Adams.

About Reg Meuross

Reg’s clever and imaginative lyrics have earned him the title of  “Master Storyteller” (PennyBlack Music) and led Mike Harding (Mike Harding Folk Show) to introduce him onto the stage of The Royal Albert Hall as “one of the finest singer-songwriters this country has produced”.

Whether it’s a village hall or the Albert Hall, Reg brings to the stage a collection of extremely beautiful songs, performed with humour and depth, and sung with the voice of an angel. Reg has that rare gift of being able to touch people, through his songs and performance, on a really human level. His words and music paint pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung.

Many will know Reg for the extraordinary intimacy of his live solo performances, and it’s the countless requests at these unique events for ‘the one that sounds just like what we’ve just heard’ that have inspired the production of this distinctive and entirely solo album of new songs.  After 10 album releases Reg Meuross has returned to the solo format which inspired him to write and sing in the first place.

Vikki Clayton

Friday 27th July 2018 – a very warm welcome back to the Hinckley ACT for the wonderful Vikki Clayton.

“Crystal clear vocals” – The Guardian.
“Peachy voiced, enchanting” – Mojo.
“No mean songwriter” – Rock n’Reel.

With special guest Dave Kirk.

About Vikki Clayton

In the early 80’s, the fun began. Invited to sing with Ragged Heroes, a cult folk rock band, Vikki  thrived.

“I’d found my forte. I’d always kicked around with rock bands and played in folk clubs but here was a chance to combine my two favourite musical loves.”

“Ragged Heroes Annual” was released to much acclaim and notice was taken of Vikki’s  lovely voice. They were invited to perform at one of the early Cropredy festivals in 1984 and gigs started to escalate. However the band drifted apart and eventually called it a day because “we were eight in number and our bar tab usually came to more than our fee”.

Then somebody sent Fairport Convention a copy of Vikki’s album “Lost Lady Found”. At the same time Jerry Donahue heard Vikki sing and was moved to tears because she sounded so much  like Sandy Denny. What became of these two events was a long period of appearing with Fairport Convention, fronting the newly formed Fotheringhay – amusingly known as “The Nerve” and forming her own band featuring stellar performers Clive Bunker, Fred T Baker and Chris Conway.

So six solo albums later and  many appearances on  other recordings Vikki is proud to release “Messenger”.

Brooks Williams

Friday 15th June 2018 – a welcome return to the Hinckley ACT for Brooks Williams.

Brooks Williams hails from Statesboro, Georgia, the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell. Ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, he’s a mean finger-picker and a stunning slide guitarist.

With special guest Guy Rogers.

About Brooks Williams

“He has a beautiful voice,” says AmericanaUK, “that you just melt into.” Not one easy to pigeon-hole, Brooks’ music is the love-child of country-blues and Americana. fRoots says, “Soulful Americana, full-on blues and tasty rootsy grooves. He really rocks!”

Williams got his start in the clubs and bars around Boston, the same music scene that years earlier sparked the careers of Bonnie Raitt and Chris Smither. There, playing 5-6 nights a week, he developed his signature sound: laid-back low-country vocals floating over Resonator riffs, Piedmont picking, and cigar box slide. No wonder friend and fellow guitar wizard Martin Simpson calls Brooks the “Real Thing!”

His massive repertoire reads like a roots music Hall Of Fame. Classic blues ranging from Bessie Smith to Memphis Slim. Compelling covers from the likes of Dave Alvin, Buddy Miller and Mose Allison. “On top of all this,” writes American Roots UK, “is his songwriting which stands comparison with virtually any of his peers.” Rooted in tradition his songs are timeless. Utterly contemporary they are wryly observed and relevant.

With twenty-two albums to his name, including “Brooks’ Blues” (2017), “My Turn Now” (2016) and “Shreveport Sessions” (2014), and a vigorous touring schedule, Williams is one of acoustic roots music’s guiding lights. From festival stages to listening rooms, from Newport to Philly, Boston to Glasgow, Cambridge to Belfast, London to Detroit, Brooks Williams is, says the San Antonio Light, “a fret monster who has to be seen to be believed!”

The Earl Trio

Friday 18th May 2018 – we welcome the Earl Trio back to the Hinckley ACT.

Acoustic and slide guitars and a mixture of original songs covering Americana, country and blues.

With special guest Richard Matthews.

About The Earl Trio

John started playing at the tender age of 6 when he asked his parents for a guitar, which was a surprise to them as they are not musical! He started learning chords from books and found a fascination in electric guitars as well as a love of rock music.

Singer/songwriter Stuart Earl started writing songs in 2001. He formed ‘EARL’ with Lyndon Webb and wrote the songs for his 1st album ‘My name is Earl –The Album’.

The duo expanded into a 4 piece band and regularly play gigs and festivals across the country. Based in South West and Wales they play acoustic and slide guitars and a mixture of original songs covering Americana, country and blues.

The second album ‘Peanuts & Monkeys’ was released in 2013. Stuart and Lyndon were joined by Michael Messer, slide guitar master and album co- producer along with Richard Causon (Tom Jones, Ryan Adams). It features pedal steel legend BJ Cole on three of the songs. The rhythm section features the talents of Andy Crowdy on Bass guitar and double bass, and Simon Price on drums.

The album was recorded ‘live’ at Leif Storm Studios, London in the summer of 2013. It comprises 11 original songs written by Stuart Earl.

The Gerry Colvin Band

Friday 27th April 2018 – a welcome return to the Hinckley ACT for The Gerry Colvin Band.

Gerry Colvin is a writer of great substance who is able to give us something that has been largely missing in English Music for a long time. “His subjects and characters are clearly defined and his songs create strong images and stories which can make us both laugh and cry in the same breath.”

About The Gerry Colvin Band

Gerry Colvin was born in Barrow-in-Furness.

In the 1970’s Gerry joined pop band ‘The Man Upstairs’. They released three singles and toured with ‘The Smiths’.

In the early 1980’s he co-founded and fronted the legendary John Peel favourite skiffle-cowpunk indie outfit ‘Terry & Gerry’. This seminal band toured Europe and the USA and appeared on countless Radio and TV shows including “The Tube” and “The Old Grey Whistle Test”. Their five singles and album all reached No.1 in the indie charts. In 2010 Cherry Red released ‘Let’s Get the Hell Back to Lubbock’, the definitive ‘Terry and Gerry’ compilation.

In the early 1990’s Gerry worked in Nashville as a professional songwriter and back in the UK collaborated with Alison Moyet, co-writing on an album project. He also penned TV themes, musicals, film scores and wrote and presented for BBC Radio 2. His band ‘Gerry Colvin’s Inexperience’, a fusion of Soul, R and B and Folk-Country, became a firm favourite on the College circuit.

In 1993 Gerry formed the folk-pop band ‘The Atlantics’: they toured extensively including a slot at Glastonbury Festival where Gerry was compere, and appeared on BBC’s prestigious ‘Pebble Mill at One’.

Colvin’s other major project at this time was film music as vocalist with ‘The National Screen Orchestra’; he also performed as a comedy double act with Hollywood superstar Mackenzie Crook.

In 1995 Gerry co-founded the five piece folk band Colvinquarmby. They released six critically acclaimed albums and were voted best band at the prestigious Fairport Convention Cropredy Festival in 2009. In 2010 they won the Hancock Award for ‘Best Live Folk Act’. In May 2013 Gerry was invited by New York producer and Robert Plant song collaborator Dave Barratt to record ‘Revolution’ for the ‘Beatles complete on ukulele’ album and website.

In 2015 the original line-up of Terry and Gerry reformed and toured nationally with rock heroes Status Quo culminating with a concert at The Albert Hall!! Terry and Gerry also appeared at Glastonbury that year and released the ‘Dear John’ EP: a self penned tribute to the late John Peel. Cherry Red re-issued the greatest hits album too!!

In 2013 Gerry released a self-penned solo album ‘Jazz Tales of Country Folk’ . His new CD ‘Six of One half a Dozen of the Other’, a collection of ten(!) brand new songs, is available now. And his novel ‘The Rabbits of Zakynthos’ will be published next year.

Annie Duggan and Rob Hines with Danny Willson

Friday 12th January 2018: we welcomed Annie Duggan and Rob Hines back to the Hinckley ACT – this time with Danny Willson!

Part of the “Dust upon the Wind tour“.

About Annie Duggan, Rob Hines and Danny Wilson

It was on a chance meeting that Danny Willson became involved in the production of Annie and Robs new album “Dust upon the Wind” with which Annie and Rob have had great success touring out in 2017.

The bringing together of two distinctive voices and two great guitarists was never more evident than when they all came together again to work with Talon at Conkers Amphitheater in August this year. It was received with thunderous applause and a wish to see them again!

Danny Willson is well known as one of the guitarists in Martin Turners Wishbone Ash and travels the world performing with him regularly.

He has exceptional talent along with a wit and humour that guarantees a great night of entertainment.

Annie has carved out a successful career of her own being on the scene for many years and is known for her captivating style on stage and wonderful voice that can span most genres of music.

Rob Hines has been compared to Richard Thompson, Johnny Marr but has a style all of his own.

Bringing them all together for a night of exceptional music is quite rare, this is an up close intimate opportunity to see them deliver songs from the new album and a variety of material from their individual back grounds.

They all come from very different backgrounds but manage to bring it all together in a cocktail of breathtaking music.

Friday 15th December 2017 – we welcomed the Sons of the Delta back for a welcome return visit to the Hinckley ACT.

The Sons play an earthy, passionate blend of electric/acoustic Juke Joint and Delta Blues flavoured with the many roots music styles from the southern states of the USA.

About Sons of the Delta

Sons of the Delta, playing tonight as a duo, was formed by two of the top Bluesmen in the SouthWest UK, Mark Cole (vocals, harp, slide guitar) and Rick Edwards (guitar, vocals). They play an earthy, passionate blend of electric/acoustic Juke Joint and Delta Blues flavoured with the many roots music styles from the southern states of the USA – from delicate, intimate acoustic numbers to full on house-rockin’ electric Blues.

The ‘Sons’ collectively have nearly 50 years experience of playing the Blues in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia. Formed originally as a duo they expanded and added drums (Martin Fitzgibbon) and electric and stand-up bass (Lyndon Webb) and are available as both an acoustic or electric duo and a four piece band.

“Fantastic” Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2

Their debut duo album One For The Road was released by UK Blues label Blues Matters Records in 2004. For many years they have been regulars on the UK festival circuit, toured in Europe and have made many trips to Mississippi to play in juke joints and clubs.

One one trip to Clarksdale they recorded their critically acclaimed band album Made in Mississippi with guests the legendary Pinetop Perkins and Sam Carr. Their new third album Tasty Nuggets is receiving praise from the music press and Radio DJs alike – in fact the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association, a collection of 33 Independent UK Blues Radio DJ’s, chose it as their Pick of the Month album for August.

Chris Wood

Friday 17th November 2017: we welcomed Chris Wood to the Hinckley ACT for the first time.

Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables.

Special guest – Leon Gormley.

About Chris Wood

A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as “Anon”.

His eagerly awaited new album ‘So Much to Defend’ (officially released 27th Jan 2017) was previewed at Cambridge Folk Festival last summer and includes reflections on minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society.

Hollow Point; his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles Menezez, won a BBC Folk Award (he’s won six.) and emphatically secured Wood’s place as a serious speech-master for the unofficial history of England.

Collaborators include Martin Carthy, Dizraeli, Billy Bragg, Andy Cutting, Andy Irvine, Karine Polwart, Jean Francois Vrod, The Imagined Village, Hugh Lupton, Martin Butler and many others.

On stage Chris has the air of a craftsman who no longer needs to be precious about his art. Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem.

“… at art school they said I had a remarkable eye for trivia, like it was a bad thing.”

ACOUSTIC MAGAZINE

“Steeped in tradition, yet always striving for a new day, this is a glorious album proving that Chris Wood is a bit of a national treasure.”
