Jigantics

Friday 20th May 2016 brings a welcome return of Jigantics – a genre-defying mix of Roots, Blues, Trad, Country and then some!

Consisting of Marion Fleetwood and Martin Fitzgibbon from Colvin Quarmby, and completed by members of Sons Of The Delta, the Jigantics appeal to those who enjoy a fusion of great songs, stunning harmonies and fine musicianship.

About Jigantics

The Jigantics are a five piece band from the West of England who the British press described as one of Roots music’s “super groups”.

Their debut album, the appropriately titled Daisy Roots, has been critically acclaimed by music journalists around the world and featured on radio playlists in well over thirty six countries. Like many bands they served a tough musical apprenticeship before breaking into the folk festival and club scene, where their upbeat musical style was found to be refreshing and joyous, crossing musical boundaries at will and taking audiences by surprise and delight.

It would seem to be an ongoing journey, as the band continue to explore all the options open to their multi instrumental, multi-talented personnel.

Marion Fleetwood couples exquisite vocals with soaring fiddle while every member, including drummer/percussionist Martin Fitzgibbon, contributes harmonies and occasionally lead vocals to the mix. The instruments get passed around with Mark Cole swopping squeeze boxes for mandolin and Lyndon Webb stand up base for acoustic guitar. Whilst another gem is the virtuoso slide guitar playing of Rick Edwards.

Phil Beer

Friday 11th March 2016: Phil Beer is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music.

A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler and plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles. But his skills don’t stop there, he also plays slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, mandocello, viola, mandolin and South American cuatro, not to mention contributing rich vocals.

About Phil Beer

He played his first gig at 14 and started working as a duo with Paul Downes in 1974 (their re-union Live at Nettlebed CD was released four years ago on the Talking Elephant label). He was then in the Arizona Smoke Revue and a key member of Johnny Coppin’s band. His impressive track record also includes touring with Mike Oldfield and being a member of the feted Albion Band from 1984-1991.

Show of Hands became a full-time partnership in the early 90s, a band that has gone on to sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times and who were voted Best Live Act, by the public, at the 2004 Folk Awards.

Phil, who also has his own Phil Beer Band, famously guested on the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album and Steve Harley’s Poetic Justice.

As a composer, Phil has written many numbers including the stunning instrumental The Falmouth Packet for SoH’s album Witness.

As a solo artist he released Rhythm Methodist in 2004, a double album of songs and instrumentals (re-released on the Talking Elephant label this year). He ran the Show of Hands Riverside studio until 2011 when he moved to a residential setting in order to concentrate on editing a series of solo and band albums for release later in 2014, the first of which being a double live album.

About Jigantics

One of the UK and Nu Folk music’s most arresting new bands, The Jigantics are part of a growing group of contemporary artists appealing to a wide range of music followers who are increasingly looking beyond conventional musical stereotypes, and just enjoying a fusion of great songs, stunning harmonies and fine muscianship.

In this case its a genredefying mix of Roots, Blues, Trad, Country and then some. “Love the new sounds! It’s really different. I can’t place the style exactly but it will certainly appeal to a wide range of people” Michaela Pape – Southsea Folk & Blues Festival.

Fantastic music…highlight act
The Daily Telegraph

One of The Jigantics great strengths is their ability to combine the power and energy of a five piece band, demonstrated here on ‘The Save’ alongside a stripped bare, dark ‘love’ song such as ‘The Willow’.

Its a pretty neat trick and in live performance they carry the audience with them on a journey of foot stomping joy tempered with only the occasional heartbreak. Seeing them live it’s clear that this band believe having a good time is an essential ingredient to any gig, ensuring that the road travelled overwhelmingly ends in a smile.
