Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn

Friday 20th February 2015 – we welcomed back Hinckley ACT favourites Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn. With special guest Red Ruff.

If you’ve been to one of their gigs you will have been struck by their easy manner on stage, an amazing array of genres, Lynn’s pure vocals and of course Steve’s breathtaking guitar playing.

About Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn

Steve is drawn to instrumental music and, as he calls, it ‘strangely beautiful, weird and difficult stuff’. In a recent interview somebody asked him who his favourite or most influential artists were and the list included Moondog, Dusan Bogdanovic, Eric Dolphy, Kronos Quartet, Harry Partch and Alan Hovhaness.

To date, Steve has played guitar in a number of musical environments including folk groups, guitar duos, and ceilidh bands.  He has given guitar playing workshops and masterclasses at venues including the Stamford International Guitar Festival and the Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago. As a solo artist Steve records for Acoustic Music Records. He is also a qualified luthier specialising in early and modern fretted instruments. Hicks and Goulbourn perform and record with guitars built by Steve.

In contrast, Lynn was drawn at an early age to the smooth harmonies of Crosby Stills and Nash and The Beach Boys and the melodic tones of James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, the sound of Motown, Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross. Later influences included Steeleye Span, June Tabor, Annie Lennox and Indigo Girls.

Whilst Lynn has had no formal training, singing has been a passion throughout her life and more recently she has enjoyed attending vocal and challenging harmony workshops in Cumbria and Shropshire, led and inspired by Maddy Prior and Abbie Lathe.

Simon Mayor & Hilary James

Simon Mayor & Hilary James

Friday 12th October 2012. A warm welcome back to the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire for the Simon Mayor & Hilary James. Across Britain from Shetland to Sark and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

“Just fantastic to go and see live. Do catch them if you can.” Fiona Talkington, BBC Radio 3.

The duo’s musical diversity has led to an equally broad range of festival invitations from Henley Classical Music Festival (England) to the Stephen Leacock Humour Festival (Canada), the Vancouver Folk Festival and countless folk and Celtic festivals throughout the world.

Simon Mayor & Hilary James at Hinckley ACT. Folk music in Leicestershire

About Simon Mayor and Hilary James…

Across Britain from Shetland to Sark, and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

If they have a speciality, it’s an ability to combine a truly diverse array of talents into a hugely entertaining stage show. There can’t be many performers who slide easi≠ly from a beautifully evocative Irish ballad into a mandolin and guitar version of Handel’s Arrival Of the Queen Of Sheba and then have the audience singing one of their own notorious comic songs, but it’s this wry humour and an easy, informal stage manner that holds it all together.

The duo’s musical diversity has led to an equally broad range of festival invitations from Henley Classical Music Festival (England) to the Stephen Leacock Humour Festival (Canada), the Vancouver Folk Festival and countless folk and Celtic festivals throughout the world.

Hilary James’ “elegant singing” (Daily Telegraph) has received huge acclaim: quintessentially English but easily crossing the great musical divides from Celtic ballads to blues and Berlioz. She’s famed too for an unlikely taste in bass instruments (she could turn up with her giant mandobass or slimline semi-acoustic double bass), accompanying Simon on guitar on anything from Vivaldi to bluegrass and even managing a step dance if the wind is in the right direction.

Simon Mayor started out as a guitarist and fiddler, but his current position as one of the world’s foremost mandolinists (and composer for the instrument) has led to an ever increasing number of invitations to play and teach at festivals and conventions (most recently the Classical Mandolin Society of America in 1999). Since 1990, his Mandolin Albums have been applauded in Celtic and classical circles alike.

Just fantastic to go and see live. Do catch them if you can.

Martin Simpson

Martin Simpson

Saturday 29th September 2012. Martin made his much anticipated debut to a sell out crowd at the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire.

There is no doubt that after 35 years as a professional musician Martin is, right now, better than ever. Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling.

Martin Simpson - blues and folk at the Hinckley ACT

About Martin Simpson…

His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving.

There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting has produced some real gems, from the truck-stop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good” and “One Day”.

His career includes collaborations on stage and record with Richard Thompson, June Tabor, Kelly Joe Phelps, Jackson Browne, Danny Thompson, Danú, Martin Carthy, Cara Dillon, David Lindley, Roy Bailey, Martin Taylor, David Hidalgo, Steve Miller, Dick Gaughan and many more.

Martin has been nominated an astounding 26 times in the twelve years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – more than any other performer – with 9 consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice. 2008 saw an incredible 5 nominations for “Prodigal Son’ and 2 wins, whilst in 2010 he had an unprecedented 6 nominations for his CD, “True Stories” and a win for Best Traditional Track, “Sir Patrick Spens”. 2012’s nominations for Martin include, Best Album for ‘Purpose & Grace”, Best Traditional Track for “The Lakes Of Ponchartrain” and Best Musician.

Whether playing American old-time music, blues, a Dylan song or his own material, Martin Simpson is unpredictable, individual and a guitarist of immense subtlety.

Graham Wardrop

Graham Wardrop

Friday 17th August 2012. There was a warm welcome back to the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire for the Christchurch based, New Zealand singer song-writer, guitarist and luthier.

“Wardrop is special and his musicianship and persona are to be treasured” Nelson Mail.

Graham has received rave reviews for his tributes to Bob Dylan and the Beatles but his own songs are equally dazzling, sophisticated and beautifully produced.

Graham Wardrop guitarist vocalist at Hinckley ACT

About Graham Wardrop…

Graham has been acclaimed as New Zealand’s finest finger style guitarist. After thirty years in the professional arena, he is regularly called upon to give concert performances, to play on television and studio recording sessions, to hold workshops in advanced fingerstyle techniques for steel string guitar, along with providing atmospheric music in sophisticated dining situations.

Graham has performed solo and alongside some of the world’s finest musicians, dazzling audiences at countless festivals, concerts and corporate functions.

Not only does Graham maintain a busy performance schedule, but he also handcrafts instruments on which he performs.

He is a musician of great versatility and his love of balance, harmony and precision culminates in his richness of sound and a unique style of performance.

Since moving back to New Zealand in 1984 a solo career has been pursued. Graham has continued to write songs, to compose instrumental guitar solos and to record in his home based studio in Christchurch. He now has five solo CDs to his credit and a live CD ‘Live Takes’ with long time friend and one of New Zealand’s great piano playing vocalists, Elizabeth Braggins. His passion for the guitar also extends to the craft of luthiery and most of the instruments he plays these days he has built himself.
