About Karen Tweed…

In Karen’s own words:-

“I play a 72 bass Pigini piano accordion supplied by the Music Room, Cleckheaton Yorkshire England and sometimes the melodica.

“Irish traditional music was my first love, but I’ve also delved into Scottish, Swedish, Danish and the music of  New England through some great collaborations down the years… and between tours I teach both privately and at workshops and folk degree courses.”

Karen currently is collaborating in duos with Timo Alakotila, Johnny Coppin, Paul Hutchinson and Kevin Dempsey; she has a new trio ‘Hell Said the Duchess’ with Hannah James and Becky Price – she also is developing her larger scale projects ‘Circa Compania’ and ‘The No 1 Ladies Accordion Orchestra’.

With special guests In Any Order

4th November 2011 – Keith London’s Birthday Bash

Michael Chapman - blues returns to the Hinckley ACT

Michael Chapman – blues returns to the Hinckley ACT

A high quality evening’s entertainment arrived at the Hinckley ACT on the 4th. Hinckley ACT favourite Michael Chapman returned – this time with the compelling Eliza Shaddad. And as an extra bonus, there was also an appearance from old favourites In Any Order.

About Michael Chapman…

This self-styled old white blues guy from Yorkshire is one of the most underrated heroes of our time.

“I had an art college education and on a rainy night in 1966 I went into a pub in Cornwall, but I couldn’t afford to pay to go in. So I said, I’ll tell you what, I don’t want to stay outside in the rain, I’ll play guitar for half an hour for you. They offered me a job for the rest of the summer and I’ve been at it ever since.”

“Michael Chapman was never just a singer-songwriter – his gritty brand of guitar based songs span folk, ragtime, jazz and blues… it’s on the tracks which feature Chapman’s magnificently bleary vocals that this album really scores. Hell To Pay and Only Pretend are outstanding tracks, that world-weary voice singing words of bitter experience. This man is so laid back that he makes JJ Cale sound like he’s on helium.”

Eliza Shaddad – ” I sing with everything I’ve got…”

About Eliza Shaddad…

“I am Eliza, Scottish and Sudanese, relocated to London to make music about 15 months ago.

“I’ve lived in seven different glorious countries, have a Masters in Philosophy, and I write quite desperate folkyjazzybluesy songs on my guitar and sing with everything I’ve got. Sometimes I play happy raps.”

John Goldie Steve Hicks & Lynn Goulbourn

John Goldie, with Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn

28th October 2011 brought a very special concert evening featuring the remarkable John Goldie – who Martin Taylor describes as “…one of the finest Acoustic guitarists in the world today”.

John Goldie - virtuoso guitarist at the Hinckley ACT

John Goldie – virtuoso guitarist at the Hinckley ACT

This was another show of the highest order, featuring a hugely talented musician that Jazz Guitar Magazine describes as a “very creative, virtuosic guitarist”, alongside two of the Hinckley ACT’s most polished and popular performers – Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn.

About John Goldie…

In John Goldie’s hands, an acoustic guitar becomes something more than a musical instrument. It becomes an extension of the man himself.

Regarded as one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the world, his unique ability to blend various styles of music with mind bending fingerstyle techniques has made him a firm favourite with audiences across the globe.

With his latest album ‘Picked in the Past’, John has taken some of the best known rock classics and arranged them for just himself and his trusted Martin guitar. The results, including covers of the Rolling Stones ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ and Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke On The Water’, have won him praise from the press and public alike, including the Stones Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman as well as Queen’s Brian May (John also covered Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ on the album).

This album is a departure from John’s previous work which has had far more of a jazz perspective to it, including his work with Martin Taylor in the multi award winning group Spirit of Django, and shows a different side to John’s playing. Watching John live is a truly mesmerising experience that shows a musician of such skill and passion that few others can come close to.

Find out why the likes of George Benson, Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor are all fans. You won’t be disappointed.

Heartstrings

Heartstrings

Elly Beurskens and Bruno van Hoek are Heartstrings

Elly Beurskens and Bruno van Hoek are Heartstrings who will play for a second time at the Hinckley ACT

Friday 19th August saw the welcome return of Heartstrings from Holland to the Hinckley ACT.

Elly Beurskens and Bruno van Hoek’s special guest was Hinckley ACT favourite, talented banjo player, guitarist, singer and teacher Guy Rogers.

About Heartstrings…

As the name of this duo implies, Elly Beurskens and Bruno van Hoek play their music – straight, clean and simple – from the heart, using their voices and the stringed instruments that are so typical for old-time country and bluegrass: banjo, dobro, mandolin, and guitar.

Both had been very active in different bands for quite a few years, when they met in the Amsterdam folk scene and discovered their mutual passion for honest acoustic music. Since 1985 they’ve been active together in bands like: Reckless Fingers, Skyland and currently Half A Turn.

As a duo, Bruno and Elly are playing songs and instrumentals in the traditional duet-style of for instance the Louvin Brothers and the Lilly Brothers. Contemporary compositions are part of their repertoire as well, but are interpreted in such a way as to fit into their overall traditional style. The focus is on the harmony vocals, their inventive handling of the stringed instruments, variation in the choice of songs, and a sober but tasteful approach to the American country tradition.
