Gigspanner

Thursday 17th March 2016: Gigspanner. Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span at the end of 2013, legendary fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner.

Please note: this concert is on a Thursday.

British traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, but the approach is what sets it apart… leaving enough room with the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment.

About Gigspanner

They have firmly established their burgeoning reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk/roots scene.

Hailed by Songlines as “another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool”, there is however far more to Gigspanner than meets the eye, and to categorise these virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians would be to significantly undersell them, and to deny audiences the full scope of their musical embrace.

As expected, British traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, but the approach is what sets it apart… leaving enough room with the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment.

In Peter’s own words “there is nothing more exciting than finding yourself lost in a new layer of inspiring and spontaneous music”. But taking it even further, subliminal, multicultural influences are fed into the mix, flirting audaciously with French, Cajun, Cuban and even Eastern European traditions.

Phil Beer

Friday 11th March 2016: Phil Beer is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music.

A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler and plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles. But his skills don’t stop there, he also plays slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, mandocello, viola, mandolin and South American cuatro, not to mention contributing rich vocals.

About Phil Beer

He played his first gig at 14 and started working as a duo with Paul Downes in 1974 (their re-union Live at Nettlebed CD was released four years ago on the Talking Elephant label). He was then in the Arizona Smoke Revue and a key member of Johnny Coppin’s band. His impressive track record also includes touring with Mike Oldfield and being a member of the feted Albion Band from 1984-1991.

Show of Hands became a full-time partnership in the early 90s, a band that has gone on to sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times and who were voted Best Live Act, by the public, at the 2004 Folk Awards.

Phil, who also has his own Phil Beer Band, famously guested on the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album and Steve Harley’s Poetic Justice.

As a composer, Phil has written many numbers including the stunning instrumental The Falmouth Packet for SoH’s album Witness.

As a solo artist he released Rhythm Methodist in 2004, a double album of songs and instrumentals (re-released on the Talking Elephant label this year). He ran the Show of Hands Riverside studio until 2011 when he moved to a residential setting in order to concentrate on editing a series of solo and band albums for release later in 2014, the first of which being a double live album.

Martin Simpson

Friday 26th February 2016 – we welcome back one of the finest artists to appear at the Hinckley ACT in recent years – Martin Simpson.

“Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving.”

About Martin Simpson

Martin has been nominated an astounding 27 times in the fourteen years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – more than any other performer – with 9 consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice.

There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting has produced some real gems, from the truck-stop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good” and “One Day”.

Dave Pegg and Anthony John Clarke

Friday 20th November 2015 – a wonderful double for the first time at the Hinckley ACT. Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull) and Anthony John Clarke (“Broken Years”, “Darling”, “The Only Life Gloria Knows”).

Dave Pegg joined Jethro Tull as bass player and spent 15 years with the band. As if playing in two bands was not enough, he set up Woodworm Records to produce and market Fairport’s albums. He also recorded a solo album.

Chances are you’ve met Anthony John at an event on the folk music circuit. He has been involved in music for many years now, having recorded twelve CD albums, three CD singles and published two songbooks.

With special guest appearance by Nigel Beck.

About Dave Pegg

Excerpt from The Fairport Convention website

“In 1980, he joined Jethro Tull as bass player and spent 15 years with the band. As if playing in two bands was not enough, he set up Woodworm Records to produce and market Fairport’s albums. He also recorded a solo album.

“Dave has also co-organised Fairport’s Cropredy festival since the early 1980s. From small beginnings, it has grown into a major event that attracts 20,000 fans each August.

“As well as recording and touring with Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull, Dave is much in demand as a session player and has contributed bass to innumerable recordings. He is also an accomplished mandolin player.”

About Anthony John Clarke

There are very few places in the UK and Ireland that Anthony John has not played. His supporters are loyal and many, and the tributes he receives from his peers bear witness to the talent and hard work of one of the folk scene’s nicest guys.

He retains his reputation as one of the top songwriters on the scene and his hard work and dedication to his craft are a credit to him. For him, songwriting is indeed a craft.

Clive Carroll with Steve Hicks

Friday 16th October 2015 – a real treat for lovers of top quality guitar playing as we welcomed back Clive Carroll, with the added bonus of a special guest appearance by Steve Hicks.

When the music press describes someone as an ‘Incredible acoustic talent’ and ‘Peerless – no other word for it…’ and when people like Jean-Christophe Novelli and Madonna are booking that same someone for their private parties then you know that something pretty special is going on….

With special guest Steve Hicks.

About Clive Carroll

Excerpt from Clive Carroll’s website

After years of travelling with guitar giants Renbourn and Emmanuel, it was time to go solo and so in 2006 Clive embarked on a series of tours under his own name, accepting an invitation to appear at the highly regarded International Guitar Night of America along the way. All the time, the buzz concerning this young virtuoso began to grow ever louder…

So, with barely time to draw breath in between working on side projects like tutoring at the Irish World Music Centre in Limerick, playing at events organised by the likes of film director Guy Ritchie and Michelin award-winning chef Jean-Christophe Novelli and travelling to the Middle East to play at the Strings Of Freedom concert for the Sultanate of Oman, work began on Clive’s third solo album, ‘Life In Colour’:

“I didn’t sit down and think, ‘Right, it’s time to write a guitar album – quite the opposite…This collection took three years to compile and each piece is associated with a particular person or major event in my life. A few tracks are connected with the joys of being a father, some were written after experiences playing alongside pop stars whilst ‘The Gentle Man’, for example, was written for my late father who is very sadly missed…”
