About Remi Harris

By Helen Armitage on 10 Young British Jazz Musicians You Should Know, The Culture Trip website.

Remi Harris first picked up the guitar at the tender age of seven and though he counts classic rock legends like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin amongst his early influences, by age 20 he was hooked on jazz. Harris’ is an eclectic, unique playing style that fuses jazz and gypsy swing with elements from rock, blues, hip hop and world music and following the release of his debut album Ninick, he was described by British jazz legend Digby Fairweather as ‘securely in the front line of the world’s finest jazz guitarists’.

“Most recently, Harris has performed at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival as part of Jamie Cullum’s live BBC Radio 2 show and is currently planning a second album.”

Mick Pini and friends

Friday 15th April 2016: we welcome Mick Pini and friends to the Hinckley ACT: “you’ll hear echoes and influences from the whole tradition of the blues in Mick’s playing”.

Those distinctive raw, attacking riffs and phrases, often reminiscent of such legendary names as Freddie King, Albert Collins or T-Bone Walker hit you with aggression not unlike a ton of bricks, then in a moment, he’ll melt your heart with a sweeping phrase of pure beauty.

About Mick Pini

Excerpt from an article on the Blues.gr website.

If you’re lucky enough to catch veteran British bluesman Mick Pini live you are guaranteed the real deal; no pedals, no effects, just a (rare) 54 Strat (stroked) played by a bluesmeister. Oh – and how he makes it plead, bleed, sing, scream, cry – and smoke!

“With a life time in music you’ll hear echoes and influences from the whole tradition of the blues in Mick’s playing. His uncompromising adherence to a genuine belief in his music has never been deflected. Those distinctive raw, attacking riffs and phrases, often reminiscent of such legendary names as Freddie King, Albert Collins or T-Bone Walker hit you with aggression not unlike a ton of bricks, then in a moment, he’ll melt your heart with a sweeping phrase of pure beauty.”

Gigspanner

Thursday 17th March 2016: Gigspanner. Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span at the end of 2013, legendary fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner.

Please note: this concert is on a Thursday.

British traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, but the approach is what sets it apart… leaving enough room with the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment.

About Gigspanner

They have firmly established their burgeoning reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk/roots scene.

Hailed by Songlines as “another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool”, there is however far more to Gigspanner than meets the eye, and to categorise these virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians would be to significantly undersell them, and to deny audiences the full scope of their musical embrace.

As expected, British traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, but the approach is what sets it apart… leaving enough room with the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment.

In Peter’s own words “there is nothing more exciting than finding yourself lost in a new layer of inspiring and spontaneous music”. But taking it even further, subliminal, multicultural influences are fed into the mix, flirting audaciously with French, Cajun, Cuban and even Eastern European traditions.

Phil Beer

Friday 11th March 2016: Phil Beer is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music.

A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler and plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles. But his skills don’t stop there, he also plays slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, mandocello, viola, mandolin and South American cuatro, not to mention contributing rich vocals.

About Phil Beer

He played his first gig at 14 and started working as a duo with Paul Downes in 1974 (their re-union Live at Nettlebed CD was released four years ago on the Talking Elephant label). He was then in the Arizona Smoke Revue and a key member of Johnny Coppin’s band. His impressive track record also includes touring with Mike Oldfield and being a member of the feted Albion Band from 1984-1991.

Show of Hands became a full-time partnership in the early 90s, a band that has gone on to sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times and who were voted Best Live Act, by the public, at the 2004 Folk Awards.

Phil, who also has his own Phil Beer Band, famously guested on the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album and Steve Harley’s Poetic Justice.

As a composer, Phil has written many numbers including the stunning instrumental The Falmouth Packet for SoH’s album Witness.

As a solo artist he released Rhythm Methodist in 2004, a double album of songs and instrumentals (re-released on the Talking Elephant label this year). He ran the Show of Hands Riverside studio until 2011 when he moved to a residential setting in order to concentrate on editing a series of solo and band albums for release later in 2014, the first of which being a double live album.

Martin Simpson

Friday 26th February 2016 – we welcome back one of the finest artists to appear at the Hinckley ACT in recent years – Martin Simpson.

“Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving.”

About Martin Simpson

Martin has been nominated an astounding 27 times in the fourteen years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – more than any other performer – with 9 consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice.

There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting has produced some real gems, from the truck-stop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good” and “One Day”.
