Simon Mayor & Hilary James

Simon Mayor & Hilary James

Friday 12th October 2012. A warm welcome back to the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire for the Simon Mayor & Hilary James. Across Britain from Shetland to Sark and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

“Just fantastic to go and see live. Do catch them if you can.” Fiona Talkington, BBC Radio 3.

The duo’s musical diversity has led to an equally broad range of festival invitations from Henley Classical Music Festival (England) to the Stephen Leacock Humour Festival (Canada), the Vancouver Folk Festival and countless folk and Celtic festivals throughout the world.

About Simon Mayor and Hilary James…

Across Britain from Shetland to Sark, and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

If they have a speciality, it’s an ability to combine a truly diverse array of talents into a hugely entertaining stage show. There can’t be many performers who slide easi≠ly from a beautifully evocative Irish ballad into a mandolin and guitar version of Handel’s Arrival Of the Queen Of Sheba and then have the audience singing one of their own notorious comic songs, but it’s this wry humour and an easy, informal stage manner that holds it all together.

The duo’s musical diversity has led to an equally broad range of festival invitations from Henley Classical Music Festival (England) to the Stephen Leacock Humour Festival (Canada), the Vancouver Folk Festival and countless folk and Celtic festivals throughout the world.

Hilary James’ “elegant singing” (Daily Telegraph) has received huge acclaim: quintessentially English but easily crossing the great musical divides from Celtic ballads to blues and Berlioz. She’s famed too for an unlikely taste in bass instruments (she could turn up with her giant mandobass or slimline semi-acoustic double bass), accompanying Simon on guitar on anything from Vivaldi to bluegrass and even managing a step dance if the wind is in the right direction.

Simon Mayor started out as a guitarist and fiddler, but his current position as one of the world’s foremost mandolinists (and composer for the instrument) has led to an ever increasing number of invitations to play and teach at festivals and conventions (most recently the Classical Mandolin Society of America in 1999). Since 1990, his Mandolin Albums have been applauded in Celtic and classical circles alike.

Just fantastic to go and see live. Do catch them if you can.

Beyond the Blue

Beyond the Blue

Friday 3rd August 2012. Artists Annie Duggan, Roger Wilson and Rob Hines are all well known locally with Ann and Rob being part of the longstanding Ann Duggan Band.

For this gig they were being joined by Roger Wilson: folk singer, highly talented fiddle player, songwriter, actor and producer who has just finished a stint in the production Warhorse at the National Theatre.

Ann Duggan Band: folk at the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire

About Beyond the Blue…

For the past 10 years Ann Duggan has slowly but surely been building a sizeable following on the U.K music scene. It would be true to say that it wasn’t until her early twenties that Ann ever considered a career in music. In fact until then, she hadn’t even sung in the bath, much less performed in public, but a chance meeting with Norfolk based songwriter Colin Granger was to change the course of her life.

Having been persuaded to road test some of his songs with him in local folk clubs and festivals she embarked on a journey from which there was to be no looking back. She has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices on the U.K live circuit, gigging extensively throughout the country to increasingly enthusiastic crowds.

Rob Hines, the guitarist, cites “main influences now are the ‘country pickers’ such as Brent Mason, Albert Lee, James Burton, Pete Anderson and Eddy Shaver, as well as people like Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan.”

Scarecrow

Scarecrow

Friday 20th July 2012. Scarecrow played some great instrumental music, song songs and occasionally a bit of jazz or blues.

Both Dave and Rey play flutes and whistles which gives the band an unusual sound and with Gordon on guitar their material, sometimes well-known and sometimes obscure, is always worked on to produce tight and quirky arrangements.

Scarecrow - Oxfordshire based trio. Folk music at the Hinckley ACT in Leicestershire

About Scarecrow…

David – whistles, flute, pipes, percussion
Rey – bass guitar, vocals, flute, whistle
Gordon – guitar, bouzouki, vocals

Scarecrow is an Oxforshire based acoustic band that plays folk music but offers something a little different. Some instrumental music, some vocals with songs and the odd bit of jazz or blues. Some tracks are well known and others less so, but all have been worked on to produce tight and unusual arrangements.

The band was formed at the end of 2006, bringing together gold, classical, rock and blues background to create a trio that doesn’t sound like just another folk band. Scarecrow is rapidly gathering a substantial following.

Gren Bartley

Gren Bartley

Friday 23rd March 2012. Providing a link between English and American folk music, Gren Bartley’s guitar playing is “effortlessly astonishing”.

But it is his soft yet absorbing voice that provides the thread of continuity throughout the set. “Beautiful Beautiful playing” – BBC Radio.

Gren Bartley folk guitar and vocals at the Hinckley ACT

About Gren Bartley…

Gren Bartley sits on the edge of the ever growing link between English and American folk music. He explores the whole range from traditional English songs to the darkest American blues ballads. Add to this his impressive songwriting with “a depth and insight of someone twice his age” and you will find an artist that is sure to be an important contributor to the roots scene for many years to come.

Gren’s live act is his strongest asset. His guitar playing is “effortlessly astonishing” and his lyrics serve perfectly to accompany the audience through the spectrum of musical landscapes he visits. But it is his soft yet absorbing voice that provides the thread of continuity throughout the set. He has toured all over the UK and is quickly building a core of fans wherever he goes. Catch him now… quick.

His solo album “Carry Her Safe”…

“With a glorious serrated edge, Gren Bartley’s “Carry Her Safe” features some great guitar and banjo picking. It’s an album of strong heartfelt songs and some great musical interludes, not just instrumentals dotted around the album, but as solos, introductions and finishes to the songs with a vocal element. There is the spirit of the troubadour about it, particularly when the harmonica kicks in. You can imagine Gren and co hitching a lift at a truck stop trying to get to the next gig. Artists like this seem to be a dying breed.”- FATEA

Gren Bartley is touring relentlessly as he believes it is on the stage that the real music happens. No two gigs the same, and with such a large repertoire of original and traditional songs, it is no wonder that he is drawing such high regard.

A phenomenal young guitarist and singer…. This chap is definitely going to  set the acoustic world alight – The Real Music Club
