About Sons of the Delta

Sons of the Delta, playing tonight as a duo, was formed by two of the top Bluesmen in the SouthWest UK, Mark Cole (vocals, harp, slide guitar) and Rick Edwards (guitar, vocals). They play an earthy, passionate blend of electric/acoustic Juke Joint and Delta Blues flavoured with the many roots music styles from the southern states of the USA – from delicate, intimate acoustic numbers to full on house-rockin’ electric Blues.

The ‘Sons’ collectively have nearly 50 years experience of playing the Blues in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia. Formed originally as a duo they expanded and added drums (Martin Fitzgibbon) and electric and stand-up bass (Lyndon Webb) and are available as both an acoustic or electric duo and a four piece band.

“Fantastic” Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2

Their debut duo album One For The Road was released by UK Blues label Blues Matters Records in 2004. For many years they have been regulars on the UK festival circuit, toured in Europe and have made many trips to Mississippi to play in juke joints and clubs.

One one trip to Clarksdale they recorded their critically acclaimed band album Made in Mississippi with guests the legendary Pinetop Perkins and Sam Carr. Their new third album Tasty Nuggets is receiving praise from the music press and Radio DJs alike – in fact the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association, a collection of 33 Independent UK Blues Radio DJ’s, chose it as their Pick of the Month album for August.

About Jaywalkers

The summer of 2012 has seen Jaywalkers – BBC Young Folk Award finalists 2009 – cement their place as one of the most exciting, virtuosic and entertaining young bands working on the British folk scene. June 4th saw the eagerly awaited release of their 2nd album – Early for a Thursday – but their busy summer was already well under way, with the band performing at over 24 festivals, from the farthest reaches of the A9 in North Scotland to the Southern tip of Swanage and an Eastern-most point of Broadstairs (and many places in-between). There was just enough time to fit in a quick trip to Europe, where the band were placed 3rd at the European World of Bluegrass in Holland (making them the 3rd best Bluegrass band in Europe…or, that’s how we say it anyway).

Amongst the deluge of festival appearances, there were main stage performances at Priddy, Fylde, Chester, Wirral Folk on the Coast, Purbeck and Didmarton – to name a few – and an undoubted highlight of a CD selling-out performance in front of 2000 people at Shrewsbury folk festival in late August.

The band met at a weekly bluegrass jam session in Helsby and played together in a variety of scratch bands and informal gatherings for several years, before Mike and Jay formed Jaywalkers in the summer of 2008; a few months prior to their folk awards success. Following the self-release of their highly successful debut album in March 2011 – ‘16 Miles’ – the duo became a trio in the form of bass player extraordinaire, Lucy Williams, who was too good on the recording not to be a permanent fixture.

For their second release – ‘Early for a Thursday’ – Jaywalkers have joined forces with label ‘101 Records’ in a natural progression after touring their independent, debut album for a year; this time, bringing a bigger and better sound into the studio for a wider distribution via Proper Music. The 12 track album features nine of mandolin player, Michael Giverin’s original compositions that draw on his experienced musicality and Northern heritage; taking inspiration from Lancashire dialect poems and quirky stories.

Creating a unique sound based on their collective and individual musical backgrounds, the band takes influence from folk, bluegrass, country and western swing music in the form of virtuosic instrumentals, three part harmony and occasional slap bass. Add good humour, tasteful arrangements and exceptional musicianship to the mix and they are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
