Patsy Matheson and Becky Mills

Patsy Matheson and Becky Mills

Friday 13th April 2012. Patsy Matheson and Becky Mills – one half of award winning acoustic quartet Waking the Witch.

These two respected songwriters have forged independent careers singing alongside Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicols and Clive Gregson but to support the release of solo albums these 2 respected singer songwriters have joined forces in a unique and personal sound, drawing on roots in traditional and contemporary folk, acoustic blues, R & B, jazz and rock.

Patsy Matheson and Becky Mills at the Hinckley ACT

About Patsy Matheson…

Her first solo album, ‘With My Boots On’, 1996 featured just her voice and that instantly recognisable guitar and received much critical acclaim (Froots described ‘an angel voice’) Along the way, she supported such names as John Martyn Glenn Tilbrook Dick Gaughan Nick Harper Al Stewart Roy Harper etc and toured the UK alongside Christy Moore as well as Gordon Giltrap. In 1997, she appearanced solo on the acoustic stage at the Glastonbury Festival.

In 2003, she took on the challenge of putting together a female vocal harmony group and Waking the Witch was formed. The band rapidly went from strength to strength, releasing three groundbreaking albums and a live DVD. They completed numerous tours of the UK, played at many of the major festivals, including Cambridge, Trowbridge and Glastonbury and made countless radio appearances, including live sessions on BBC Radio 2 for both Janice Long and Bob Harris . Patsy’s song ‘Rock n Roll’ was featured on Mike Harding’s Radio 2 Folk & Roots show.

Following the farewell tour of Waking the Witch in spring 2008, and armed with a bunch of brand new songs, Patsy set about recording a solo album, ‘Little Piece of England’ . Over the last 3 years, she has toured the length and breadth of the UK, ccompanied by legendary songwriter/guitar player, Clive Gregson and also can be heard singing on his latest album‘Bittersweet’ (Spring 2011).

About Becky Mills…

Becky has an unusual way of describing herself…

“My name is Rebecca Tamsin Ballantyne Mills. Seriously! I am a quarter of the band ‘Waking The Witch’. I don’t do much solo stuff anymore, – I much prefer playing with my Weehatches, it’s so much more fun. I have been performing since I was 16 and writing for all that time too. I am completely doing this wrong aren’t I? I will start again… Becky first started performing at the age of 16 to huge audiences in Harrogate.

“She was declared ‘a massive talent’ by the time she was 17 and everybody loved her. She became friends with Sting, and it was he himself who decided that Harrogate should erect a large bronze statue of her image in the town centre. In spring, the children dance around it and sing Becky Mills songs in her honour. The same thing happens in her home town of Pickering, but the statue is made of wood and has since shed its nose. I am often told…I mean, she is often told that had she not become a pop/rock/folk star then U2 would probably be more well-known today.”

John Goldie Steve Hicks & Lynn Goulbourn

John Goldie, with Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn

28th October 2011 brought a very special concert evening featuring the remarkable John Goldie – who Martin Taylor describes as “…one of the finest Acoustic guitarists in the world today”.

This was another show of the highest order, featuring a hugely talented musician that Jazz Guitar Magazine describes as a “very creative, virtuosic guitarist”, alongside two of the Hinckley ACT’s most polished and popular performers – Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn.

About John Goldie…

In John Goldie’s hands, an acoustic guitar becomes something more than a musical instrument. It becomes an extension of the man himself.

Regarded as one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the world, his unique ability to blend various styles of music with mind bending fingerstyle techniques has made him a firm favourite with audiences across the globe.

With his latest album ‘Picked in the Past’, John has taken some of the best known rock classics and arranged them for just himself and his trusted Martin guitar. The results, including covers of the Rolling Stones ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ and Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke On The Water’, have won him praise from the press and public alike, including the Stones Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman as well as Queen’s Brian May (John also covered Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ on the album).

This album is a departure from John’s previous work which has had far more of a jazz perspective to it, including his work with Martin Taylor in the multi award winning group Spirit of Django, and shows a different side to John’s playing. Watching John live is a truly mesmerising experience that shows a musician of such skill and passion that few others can come close to.

Find out why the likes of George Benson, Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor are all fans. You won’t be disappointed.

One of the most innovative acoustic guitarists in the UK today, Gordon Giltrap has developed his own unique style, much copied, but never bettered. Over the past forty years, he has graced the music business with his dedication to his craft and his affection for his audience. As one of the UK’s most respected guitarists, he has consistently proved the adage that respect cannot be bought. It must be earned.

Gordon has released 25 original studio albums, plus numerous live albums and compilations.

Classical Guitar Magazine…
‘Giltrap’s technical skill and wide ranging compositional output make him one of the British guitar scene’s foremost class acts and one of the most able acoustic guitarists of our time.’

Brian May…
“Gordon Giltrap is one of an elite few who truly have become legendary in their field in their own lifetime. I am proud to call him my friend.”

Other more recent projects include 3 Parts Guitar with John Etheridge and Ray Burley, which performed a series of concerts in 2009. 2010 saw the inclusion of Clive Carroll in this supergroup and the album 4 Parts Guitar was released in early 2011.

Gordon’s music continues to evade categorisation, influenced as it is by the rock guitar of Hank Marvin and Pete Townshend, the folk guitar of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, and the classical guitar of Julian Bream and John Williams.

Guitar and Bass magazine Jan 2007…
“Giltrap’s virtuoso status is unassailable”
